The locomotive was manufactured under the 2ES5K name with a booster section (2ES5KB) until July 31, 2007.

The main line 3ES5K class electric freight locomotive (with a booster unit) is designed to haul freight trains on 1520 track gauge rail lines. The locomotive will replace VL80 class electric freight locomotives of all versions.

Design features of the two-unit 2ES5K Yermak electric locomotive are given in the advertising leaflet for this electric locomotive.

The three-unit 3ES5K electric locomotive consists of two leading (trailing) units and a booster unit, which is produced without a driver's cab.

The booster unit has a set of equipment, which provides for the electric locomotive's operation in traction and regenerative braking modes, controlled by a single locomotive crew from a driver's cab in the leading or the trailing unit.

The electric locomotive has a gangway from the driver's cab of the leading unit to the driver's cab of the trailing unit via the booster unit.

The booster unit has gangway platforms, which are sealed at the end doors for passage of operating personnel. No equipment or electric circuits auxiliary to the driver's cab are installed in the booster unit.

No current collector is mounted on the booster unit.

The booster unit has a toilet room. To provide for ventilation the locomotive has external air supply with heating in winter period. The room air temperature should be at least +16 °С in winter conditions of operation. For summer period a ventilation mode is available.
